Elbowruminations is a blog by Neil Gilbert and Kevan Gilbert, in association with Elbowroom Design. As the authors of this blog, it’s our mission to inspire discussion and provide useful ideas around the topic of graphic design.
We aim to improve communication by highlighting best (and worst) practices in design. Written directly for small business owners and graphic design geeks, Elbowruminations focuses on five main categories:
Features: This is where we give in-depth focus and coverage to one specific design-related subject. We dive into a certain trend, product or industry development, and explain its relevance to you, the design community, or the world at large. By the end of the post, you will know something new about an event or a trend and how it affects you.
Around Calgary: This is one of our most popular categories, despite being fairly Calgary-centric. We provide commentary on advertising and design we spy around the city. Whether it’s a glowing review or a scathing critique, you’re bound to pick up some tips for how to do design right.
Technology: With an eye on new software, hardware, and new gadgets, we’ll tell you why a new product matters (or doesn’t), let you know what we think of a specific product, and helpfully explain how to use it.
Ask the Experts: This is where you ask the questions and we answer them. If you’re looking for our humble opinions on what we think of a specific logo or advertisement, or would like some seasoned advice on handling difficult design situations, feel free to ask, and we will reply.
Blogs we Know: Whenever we come across another blog or website that dispenses good advice or design related content, we’ll share it with you in this category.
As always, we welcome any and all feedback you have to offer. Thanks for reading!

Our Policy on Advertising
In an effort to sustain and maintain our blog, we have chosen to use advertisers to help us make blogging viable. We don’t want to bother or harass you with these ads, instead we’d like to use the opportunity to showcase products that we like or use on a daily basis, hopefully bringing about a win-win situation! We promise only to promote advertisers who offer relevant products that we think you’d like because we like them too. With that being the case, you can rest assured that in addition to displaying good design or technology related products, we’ll never resort to crazy ploys like pop-overs, pop-unders, or anything that could case epileptic seizures. We hope you are OK with this. If not, let us know how we can improve.
